The University of Texas at Austin (www.utexas.edu) seeks a visionary leader to serve as Director of the Biomedical Imaging Center. The Director will be appointed in an appropriate academic department within the faculties of Engineering, Medicine, Natural Sciences, and/or Liberal Arts. An Imaging Research Center (IRC, https://irc.utexas.edu/) has been housed in the College of Natural Sciences and focused primarily on neuroscience. The Director will transition the IRC to the Biomedical Imaging Center (BIC) and will build the BIC to become an interdisciplinary, multi-methods facility focused on developing and applying non-invasive in vivo imaging to study health and disease. The Director will expand both the BIC’s technical abilities and its reputation in biomedical imaging on national and international stages by recruiting investigators, expanding funding, developing resources, and establishing collaborative relationships with its partners in academia, government, philanthropy, and industry. While serving as an active and engaged member of his/her home department, with appropriate teaching and advising commitments and an active research program, the Director will report to the Vice President for Research, Dan Jaffe, PhD, on all aspects of the management, growth, and success of the Center as both a space for leading-edge science and a best-in-class core facility.
An engaged and growing user base exists for the BIC among faculty in Biomedical Engineering , Pharmacy, Chemistry, Communications, Psychology, Kinesiology, Neuroscience, and the Dell Medical School. Dell (https://dellmed.utexas.edu/), which welcomed its first class in 2016, substantially expands the opportunity set for biomedical imaging at UT Austin, with major translational research opportunities in cancer, the clinical neurosciences, and cardiology. Dell physicians and the clinical resources and programs managed at its clinical partner, Dell Seton Medical Center, stand ready to contribute to and benefit from the activities housed at BIC. UT Austin is also the home of the Texas Advanced Computing Center (www.tacc.utexas.edu), which operates some of the world's most powerful advanced computing resources enabling discovery across all fields of science and engineering.
The BIC is poised to expand into a new state-of-the-art facility in the recently completed Health Discovery Building (HDB) located in the heart of the campus’s medical district. The BIC will occupy large sections of two floors: one focused on pre-clinical imaging, the second focused on clinical imaging. The current pre-clinical suite of equipment includes a Bruker BioSpec 7T MRI, a Siemens Inveon PET/CT, and an Xenogen IVIS Spectrum. The current clinical imaging equipment includes a Siemens Skyra 3T MRI scanner, a state-of-the-art Siemens 3T scanner, and a GE Discovery MI PET/CT scanner. Two additional bays within the HDB can support other clinical imaging devices.

Qualifications include a doctorate in engineering, physics, or a related field and an outstanding record of research accomplishments, publications, and externally sponsored funding. The University expects the Director to have a successful record of mentoring the next generation of leaders in biomedical imaging and a strong interest in undergraduate and graduate teaching in biomedical imaging. The Director must demonstrate a strong desire to build collaborations with the Dell Medical School, the Mulva Clinic for Neuroscience, and the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes, as well as with other area medical centers including the Austin Heart Hospital and the Seton Stroke Institute, and with other medical institutions across Texas such as MD Anderson Cancer Center, UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, the Texas Heart Institute, and UT Health Science Centers at Houston and San Antonio. A record of sustained cross-disciplinary collaborations and bridge-building that such engagements require will provide important evidence that candidates are fully prepared for the transformative impact University sponsors of this initiative seek.
