Formed in 2009, the SDMS Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization affiliated with the SDMS. The SDMS Foundation fosters professional learning and excellence by working to improve the field of diagnostic medical sonography.
The Genetic Counselor coordinates patient care, education and follow up for the department of OB/GYN. Primarily the Genetic Counselor counsels patients who are at risk for various genetic disorders and congenital anomalies; obtains family history and pertinent medical records; reviews available testing options including genetic lab work and diagnostic procedures; provides emotional support to the patient and family as needed; maintains contact with patients during waiting periods for test results; works closely with physicians to determine which patients require extensive counseling or specialty referrals; obtains results from laboratories, informs patients of results and counsels appropriately; maintains records of all patient contact, including those patients who decide against testing; communicates by telephone, electronic medical record, and letter with referring physicians; and delivers patient care individualized relative to age/developmental, psycho-socio-cultural patient treatment needs. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Master's degree in genetic counseling or equivalent and at least two years of related experience along with licensure from the state of PA as a genetic counselor, and board eligible or certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
